Bookmark or Share- Determining grammatical function of "after" and "before"After is defined as both a preposition and a conjunction, as is before. In a sentence that uses after or before, how can one determine whether it is functioning as a preposition or a conjunction? Take, for example, these sentences: Before/After breakfast, Mac had a headache. Before/After eating breakfast, Mac had a headache.
- What is the difference between an adjective before the noun and after ...When an adjective comes after the noun it describes (like in the 3rd example), it functions as a postpositive modifier. Changing the position of the adjective (relative to the noun it describes) may bring a slight difference in the meaning of the sentence (the meaning of the word itself does not change!).
- “By the time” = “Before”? - English Language Learners Stack ...Before he arrives (here), we will have already left. Before he gets here, we will have already left. (More informal and conversational.) We will have already left before he arrives. We will have left some time before he arrives. He will arrive (here) after we have left. If he departs now, he won't make it here before we leave.

If we use "until", it means that "he went to LA after he became thirty"; insisting on the second event. If we use "before", it means that "he didn't stay in NY after the age of thirty".
