Atlantis lost the war, but was destroyed only after violent earthquakes and floods occurred, which sadly also destroyed the ultra-ancient Athens. The story of the earthquakes and floods is meant to explain why the ancient Greeks apparently had so much trouble navigating that part of the ocean: Plato attributes this to a shallow layer of mud there.
