Dec 5, 2016. #7. I agree with ATLGS, above. Americans generally do not 'sit exams' or 'sit for exams'; both forms, transitive and intransitive strike me as British. There is some debate about 'for', “Sit for” (an exam) but my impression from reading the respondents is that both forms turn up in the UK. Further examples: More @Wikipedia
