Bookmark or Share- grammar - Difference between "anyone" and "anyone else" - English ...In both of your examples, you could leave out the "else" since it will be understood / implied. in your examples, strictly speaking, you and John are included in "anyone", so what you are trying to say is. anyone, except for the people I've already identified, which is equivalent to. anyone else. The same holds true for everyone.
- pronouns - harder than "anyone" in his class or harder than "any other ...If he works harder than anyone, then he would be working harder than himself, which is not possible. As such, it must be "anyone else" or "any other student". While this is the grammatically correct way to say it, there are plenty of native speakers who would say "He works harder than anyone in his class," so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
- auxiliary verbs - Does anyone "has" or "have" - English Language ...The answer is "have." However, the point is moot when one considers the more acceptable form (picture a classroom setting), "Who here has a black pen?" Mary might answer, "Jane has one." Jane might answer, "I have one." While to the original form, "Does anyone have a black pen" the literal answer could be "Yes, of course."

(You didn't ask about this, but it's worth specifying:) in the phrasal verb have to, meaning be obliged to", have is not an auxiliary, and may take "do support" in questions and negatives: I don't have to go. or. I haven't got to go.
- phrase usage - "anything but" and "anything else but" - English ...A: "No, nothing else". [except bread] General statements in a conversation without any previous information or questions about a thing or topic: "Ah, I never called the house anything but the Pyramid." There would be no reason to say "anything else" in this case. Anything else can refer to a list or several options.
