Bashar al-Assad, president of Syria since 2000, when he succeeded his father, Hafez al-Assad. In spite of early hopes that he would support democratic reforms, he largely continued his father’s authoritarian methods. Beginning in 2011, he faced a major uprising that evolved into civil war.
