My understanding to get the air bag the gvrw had to be below 8600. So they put 3.42s in the rear to (the gears lowered the gvrw), added an air bag, and I am pretty sure an egr (vin S). On the stubborn ones I leave the box attached and rock the steering wheel while a friend taps it off. (With a bungee cord to the brake pedal from the steering wheel on air bag years.) The rocking helps the shaft slide off.

I would check for any other codes from the engine, etc. If there a bunch of codes all of a sudden (rather than a single airbag code or two) replace the ignition switch as it is causing a brownout and goofing up
