The fin whale, named for the small fin that protrudes from its back, above its tail, ranges throughout the world’s major oceans. Fin whales in the North Atlantic, such as the one shown here, are lumped together with those from the North Pacific as a single subspecies, though experts believe the two populations are distinct.
