I have never used CPM154, but I greatly prefer 154CM to 420HC because of better edge retention. I have no trouble sharpening 154CM. I believe the reports that CPM154 is better than 154CM. I would definitely go with the CPM154 rather than 420HC.

I believe their M390 is 60-62. I understand tool steels will generally be tougher (I know 154CM isn't tool steel), and that toughness depends on blade shape, edge geometry, heat treat, cutting methods ...
- VG10 vs. 154cm - BladeForums.comThough I of course respect knarfeng’s opinion, I strongly feel VG-10 takes a much finer edge than 154CM. I think everything else is a wash but man can I put a fine edge on VG10 in a couple minutes that rivals any steel in my collection. 154CM always feels a little more difficult to sharpen.

I know that was a pain to thin out, so I had it convexed by BRK&T. I have not looked back since then, and I can keep it razor sharp now. I have never had a problem with 154CM, but how does it compare to D2?
