Bookmark or Share- Using "no" at the end of a statement instead of "isn't it"?A number of European languages (e.g. French, Spanish, Italian) do use 'no?', 'non?' as normal, idiomatic tag questions, so that such an utterance in English is a cliché of 'foreign-ness', e.g. in lazily written novels. According to @TimR, The "no" tag is heard in American English but it's not used colloquially.
- modal verbs - English Language Learners Stack ExchangeWon't is one of, if not the, earliest contracted word. It is actually a contraction of the old English wonnot (1500's). Wonnot is no longer used but the contraction remains. It is commonly taken to mean will not, and this works in 95% of cases.
- Should there be a space after “No.”, “p. (=page)” before numbers and ..."No." also is followed by a space (see the aforelinked MLA page and here for an example in APA). There is never any space in "a.m." or "p.m.", but some style guides say to not use periods either, or to use small caps (please see the source; small caps don't work well here):
- multiple negation - “Yes, I did not" vs “No, I did not“ - English ...No [I didn't bump it] The only time a “Yes, I did not bump it” would make sense (in my view) were if the speaker had responded to the following observation Commenter: I know you didn't bump the post.
- articles - Difference between "not a", "no" and "not any" - English .../// No.1 is an emphatic answer to questions of this type - "Is there an apple on the table?" ; "Isn't there an apple on the table?" So I want to know about quantity, singular - about one apple, but it is not a specific apple - I want to know about "an" apple, any apple at all, but quantity=singular. 2) There is no apple on the table.
