Whiskers are stiff hairs that generally grow out of an animal’s face. In mammals, whiskers are also called vibrissae. These specialized hairs are rooted deeply in the skin. Whisker follicles are packed with nerves and blood vessels, making whiskers very sensitive. More @Wikipedia
