Bookmark or Share- a couple of ten thousand dollars | WordReference ForumsHi, I know there is the phrase "tens of thousands of (dollars) ", but it seems to me that the phrase implies this is quite big a sum of money, what should I say if I want to imply this is an insignicant sum of money? Can I say "It could be settled with only a couple of ten thousand dollars" ...

Once again, it may be the logic that I try to impose on a completely illogical language but since there are many thousands of thousands, I just naturally think of it in the plural. To me, "a thousand" is just that - a single unit of one thousand (1,000). Same can be said for "dozen", etc.

I often run into the problem in English: how to express a vague range of numbers. There are "dozens", "hundreds", "thousands" and "millions" but there is nothing in between.

To me, tens of thousands means somewhere between 20,000 and 90,000 but more likely under 50,000. These terms are often used when no one knows the exact count but they know that it is at least the minimum indicated by the phrase.
