So first command fails, because this can't be gunzipped. Second command just verbosely extract the archive, without trying to gunzip it.

- linux - tar: add all files and directories in current directory ...Had a similar situation myself. I think it is best to create the tar elsewhere and then use -C to tell tar the base directory for the compressed files. Example: tar -cjf workspace.tar.gz -C
$(ls -A ) This way there is no need to exclude your own tarfile. As noted in other comments, -A will list hidden files.
