Question: I prefer "are taken seriously" to "are being taken seriously", but I don't know why. Maybe the latter is ok. Maybe the latter is ok. I assume that in this context, the simple present indicates an existing state, while "are being taken seriously" implies it's just a temporary state happening now. More @Wikipedia
