Sarah and Angelia's father, Judge John Faucheraud Grimké, was an advocate of slavery and a planter who owned several successful plantations [7] and hundreds of slaves. Grimké had 14 children with his wife Mary (née Smith) and had at least three children with enslaved women.Three of his children died in infancy.
