Patterollers, also called patrollers, pattyrollers, or paddy rollers by the slaves, were organized groups of 3 to 6 white men who enforced discipline upon black slaves from 1704 (beginning in South Carolina) to 1865 (end of the Civil war), in the Southern states. They policed slaves on plantations and hunted down fugitives.
