On the other hand, I have had the opportunity to use my cousin's 19" axe which in my opinion is a better option if you want a "Jack of all trades" axe.

When I did a lot of camping in the past, I nearly never brought a hatchet so at least where I am it does not seem to be a necessity. I favor short machetes. Some have saw teeth. Both have about 12-inch blades. While I believe they are more useful than a hatchet you cannot hammer with them.

They don’t get carried much b/c once you get past 1.5lb head weight something two handed is sure more suitable for chopping most of the time.
