Bookmark or Share- How to tell if my BBC is a gen V, gen VI, or mark IV?Gen 5 won't, but it'll have the same timing cover. May have cast aluminum valve covers if they're original. Gen 6 has a plastic timing cover that's held in place by 6 bolts, may or may not have provision for fuel pump (crate engines had 'em, production engines didn't).

That leaking oil seeps down the block to look like a pan gasket leak. The Gen V uses a die cast aluminum valve cover that is sealed with a rubber O-ring instead of a cork gasket.
