In June 1971, President Nixon declared a “war on drugs.” He increased the size, presence, and funding of federal drug control agencies. He pushed through measures such as mandatory sentencing and no-knock warrants. In 1973, he created the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). More @Wikipedia
