Bookmark or Share- ATF+3 vs. Atf+4? - BobIsTheOilGuyA TSB went out basicly instructing customers and dealerships to use ATF+4 in place of ATF+3 upon first serviceing of the transmission. ATF+4 is backwards compatable with ATF+3. THe Cf is the same for the two fluids. ATF+4 has better cold and hot temp. performance and is more restant to oxidation.

The basic difference is that type F contains no friction modifiers, while all others do in varying amounts. Toyota also used type F until the early 1980's. Our 1981 Toyota had the fluid changed and the shop used Dexron by mistake. It slipped badly.

It contains additives that are not intended for use in engines as the only lubrication. However running 1 qt of ATF w/ 4 qt or 5 qt of engine oil has long been used as a flush technique of lore.

My volvo fitted with Aisin transmission requires "so called" special volvo ATF which I've been told is Mobil 3309 without the huge Volvo price mark up. Mobil 1 supplied by most big box auto stores may try to tell you that Mobil 1 ATF is the same as Mobil 3309.
