(Recall the encounter descriptors in "Combat Encounter Difficulty" on DMG p.82.) The exceptions are at levels 5-7, where the "CR-appropriate" monster actually yields an Easy encounter. CR=APL-1 usually yields an Easy encounter.
- How rare are magic items and how many should I be handing out?As a DM I look at the campaign I am running. I hand pick magic items that make sense in my dungeon. There is also the feat of why have magic items in a hoard.
- Is there a playable correlation between CR and level in 5e?The CR3 of the Bugbear Chief for example means it is an appropriate challenge for a party of 3rd level characters. In other words that one player alone would be only a tiny bit weaker than the rest of the party combined. Very far from balanced. A simple Bugbear (CR1) would be more appropriate.
- How much gold should a character gain per level?7. At the start of level 5 they should have roughly 700 gold each, and at the end 3000 gold each - so they gain a total of about 2300 gold. The amount of gold you gain isn't the same each level, as you level up the amount of wealth you accumulate will increase. - How much loot (in GP) Should I be giving my players?Chapter 7 of the Dungeon Master Guide has a nice set of tables regarding loot. I recommend giving them a chance. After having used them for a few session you will get to know how well they fit your DM style, and you'll be able to adjust the loot up or down as you feel appropriate.
