Bookmark or Share- word usage - English Language Learners Stack ExchangeThe standard usage for 4-year schools in the United States (either high school or undergraduate university) is. 1st year: freshman ; 2nd year: sophomore ; 3rd year: junior ; 4th year: senior; As far as I know, these are not in general usage in other English-speaking countries.

"I'm a student at the University" would distinguish between being a student and working on the campus but not actually as part of the university.

But the average UK reader (and indeed the average US reader) probably wouldn't have heard of it, so the headline referred to it as "[a] Virginia university." –
