Former House speaker Newt Gingrich has taken a double-digit lead over former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney for the Republican presidential nomination in a new nationwide Gallup Poll. Gingrich's 37% standing is higher support than any Republican candidate has scored to date in Gallup surveys this year that have been led, at various times, by five other contenders. Romney is at 22%.

Now, it's looking like he's the sleeping giant that has finally awaken. It still remains to be seem if he can keep this up. Mitt Romney has been able to weather the storm through each of the other candidate's rise - Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, and Herman Cain. Gingrich seems to be most formidable of the bunch, with the double digit lead.
