Dish's $25.5 billion Sprint bid may force others to act

Dish Network Corp, the No. 2 U.S. satellite television provider, on Monday offered to buy wireless service provider Sprint Nextel Corp for $25.5 billion in cash and stock, a move that could inspire other telecommunications or video companies to consider their own prospects of combining.

Dish Network Corp. is trying to snag U.S. wireless carrier Sprint Nextel Corp. away from its Japanese suitor in recognition of the way satellite dishes are losing their relevance in the age of cellphones that play YouTube videos.

 

DISH Network and Voom HD reach settlement; DISH will pay $700 million in cash and resume carrying AMC

Terms of the settlement call for DISH Network to pay $700 million in cash. As part of the agreement, DISH will receive 500 MHz of wireless multichannel video distribution and data service ("MVDDS") spectrum licenses that cover a population of 150 million in 45 DMAs including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Philadelphia. As part of a separate, multi-year agreement, DISH will resume broadcast of the AMC channel Sunday, October 21. The AMC channel will be carried on DISH channel 131.

TiVo Posts Surprise FY Q1 Profit On Legal Settlement

TiVo late Tuesday reported better-than-expected results for its fiscal first quarter ended April 30. For the quarter, the DVR seller posted revenue of $45.7 million and diluted EPS of $1.04 a share, with adjusted EBITDA of $149.4 million. The Street had been expecting revenue if $42 million and a loss of 31 cents a share. Adjusted EBITDA and net income reflect litigation proceeds of $175.7 million from the company’s recent patent infringement settlement with Dish Network.
