‘Despicable Me’ Gives Universal a Needed No. 1 Hit

“Despicable Me,” Universal’s formal entrance into the animated feature business, was a huge No. 1 at the North American box office over the weekend with an estimated $60.1 million. The result, partly driven by tickets to 3-D screenings, which sell for a premium of $3 to $5, was far better than predicted.

... Despicable Me 3D today is translating into "amazing" attendance of $22 million for what could be a $55M-$60M weekend opening despite having two other 3D family films in the marketplace.

Senh: I was expecting a hit, but not this big of a hit. It does have an interesting and original premise and having Steve Carell voice the title character helps. Now Universal Pictures is officially in the animation game.
