GATE CITY — The extravaganza that is Gate City basketball ratcheted up a notch Wednesday, but in the end it was business as usual for the Blue Devils. It was not a typical night for Mac McClung, however. The 6-foot-2 showstopper erased a mighty big name from the VHSL record books with a 22-foot trey at the 6:16 mark of the final quarter, as Gate City rolled on with an 80-43 Region 2D quarterfinal rout of Lebanon. McClung finished the evening with 41 points, eclipsing Virginia’s single-season scoring record, a mark held by NBA legend Allen Iverson for 25 years. The Georgetown signee has scored 958 points this season — 10 more than Iverson recorded in his junior season at Bethel High School — and counting, as Gate City (24-1) marches on in the postseason. The Blue Devils will face Union in Friday’s 8:30 p.m.
