LACONIA, N.H. – A New Hampshire man is in custody after allegedly firing shots near a police officer who was trying to serve him with a stalking petition – prompting the evacuation of a Laconia neighborhood. Police Capt. Matt Canfield said 32-year-old Ernest Thompson of Laconia first threatened the officer with his dogs, then ran outside the house and began firing shots into the ground near the officer. Authorities evacuated the surrounding neighborhood soon after the incident began early Friday afternoon. Police say Thompson was still in his yard, waving around the handgun, when officers used an armored vehicle to arrest him. Thompson is charged with two counts of felony threatening and with felony reckless conduct. He remains in custody pending arraignment Monday.
