Lpga Boulevard Widening In Daytona Beach Moving Forward...again

DAYTONA BEACH - A long-awaited project to widen LPGA Boulevard's bottleneck could soon move forward after a number of delays including a miscalculation that will force two cities to relocate utility pipes.Volusia County had hoped to begin widening a roughly half-mile stretch of LPGA from Jimmy Ann Drive to Derbyshire Road this spring, but crews found Daytona Beach and Holly Hill had utility pipes that were going to conflict with stormwater pipes being laid by the county, said Gerald Brinton, the county's director of engineering and construction."It didn't do anything but affect the time," he said, adding construction now could begin as soon as October. The pipe relocation is just one item in a long list that has delayed the project, which has been an idea for close to two decades. After widening the stretch from Nova to just east of LPGA's intersection with Derbyshire in 2011, Volusia had to wait to obtain the rest of the funding to widen the stretch from Derbyshire to Jimmy Ann, Brinton said, which has caused a bottleneck during peak traffic hours.Another hold-up occurred as county officials negotiated with property owners to secure rights-of-way. One of the last settlements reached was with Duane and Leslie Johnson, who co-own D.J.'s truck service.
