Altitude and attitude add up for anyone willing to look for autumn hues in Sierra ridges and canyons. Fall colors are in full evidence this time of year around Bishop, the largest town along a long stretch of Highway 395 on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada range. The Bishop Creek Area, off Highway 168 about 20 miles west of Bishop, is one of Northern California’s most dependable spots to see fall colors, from now until the middle or even end of October. Lisa Rands, an eminent boulderer, years ago holds onto the face of a rock called Extasy Boulder, one of several ascentable slabs north of Bishop.
