WILKES-BARRE — By day he’s a rabbi, but at night Roger Lerner could be riding along on patrol with a city police officer. It’s part of the diversity training community leaders are ready to begin with the Wilkes-Barre Police Department. “We call it diversity training, but it really, it’s like, what’s the best way in which we can interact?” asked Lerner of Temple B’nai B’rith in Kingston. He and others are ready to meet with police after roll calls for frank discussions to help them do their jobs and in turn learn about what it’s like to wear a badge in a city where more people of different races, religions and places are calling home. Being able to speak and understand some basic Spanish in order to ask questions and gather information is one aspect of the training.
