The grants are available to nonprofit organizations serving a 16-county area covering Alcorn, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Clay, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Lowndes, Monroe, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Oktibbeha, Tishomingo, Tippah and Union counties. “There’s a lot of focus on early diagnosis,” said Rachel Wood, who serves as the grant committee chairwoman. North Mississippi Medical Center Breast Cancer Center plans to use part of its $30,000 grant to take breast health education and screening to women in underserved areas identified by the Komen affiliate in Chickasaw, Clay, Prentiss and Oktibbeha counties. “We’re going to use our mobile mammography unit to plug into those communities,” said Missy Cole, breast cancer center technical director. Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation received $53,000 to provide mammogram assistance through its hospitals in Booneville, Columbus, New Albany and Oxford. “We try to be very proactive,” said Wanda Barbour Dent, who serves as women’s health navigator for the Baptist Cancer Center in Oxford.
