The world was introduced to James Dean in the spring of 1955, when Elia Kazan’s powerful adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” hit cinemas. Half a year later, Dean was dead at 24 in a car accident. So “Eden,” filmed in the Salinas Valley and Monterey County, was the only one of Dean’s films whose success he was able to enjoy.
