Garner inmate charged with assault DANBURY-- A man serving a three-year sentence for robbery pleaded not guilty Thursday in state Superior Court to assaulting two fellow inmates at Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown, injuring one seriously enough to require hospitalization. Edward Cruz, 25, was charged with first-degree assault and third-degree assault for attacking one of the inmates, then punching a second who tried to intervene after Cruz allegedly kicked the first man repeatedly as he lay on the ground, according to state police.
