MIAMI GARDENS — In a weird turn of events, the top of the Miami Dolphins’ 2022 draft class is trying to catch up to the top of their 2023 draft class. That’s right, linebacker Channing Tindall, the Dolphins’ 2022 third-round pick out of Georgia, and wide receiver Erik Ezukanma, the Dolphins’ 2022 fourth-round pick out of Texas Tech, are chasing cornerback Cam Smith, the 2023 second-round pick out of South Carolina, and running back De’Von Achane, the third-round pick out of Texas A&M, as far as performance and expectations. At least Tindall (game-best nine tackles) and Ezukanma (two carries, 52 yards; three receptions for 15 yards), who both had sluggish rookie seasons, made good showings in Friday’s 19-3 loss to Atlanta in the preseason opener. Both have a long way to go before earning a role from scrimmage, but it sounds as though they’re heading in the right direction. “I think the biggest thing is that guys continue to get better and learn to worry about the right stuff,” coach Mike McDaniel said about preseason games and training camp, “and I think those two have.” At this point it doesn’t appear that either Tindall or Ezukanma will open the season with a regular role from scrimmage.
