The Denver Police Department is once again prohibiting food trucks from operating in parts of Lower Downtown during late-night weekend hours. Police officials attribute the policy change to a need to control crowds and prevent violent incidents after bars and nightclubs let out. But food truck operators and advocates question any attempt to correlate people hawking hot dogs and crime. “This ban doesn’t even make any sense,” said Justin Pearson, an attorney at the Virginia-based nonprofit Institute for Justice, which rallied against a similar Denver police policy in 2022.
