Taveras, who was under several protective orders banning him from contacting the woman, is accused of entering her apartment armed with an AK-47, tying her to a chair, taping her mouth, threatening to kill her, and sexually assaulting her. Court records claim the violent home invasion took place May 28, 2014, while the victim and defendant’s 5-year-old son and one of her friends were in the apartment. Taveras is accused of aggravated sexual assault, home invasion, unlawful restraint, threatening, criminal possession of a firearm, assault with a firearm, risk of injury to a child, strangulation, witness intimidation, and kidnapping with a firearm, among other offenses. The kidnapping charge stems from an hour-long car drive Taveras is accused of forcing his ex-girlfriend and their son to take after the home invasion in May 2014, Hodge told the judge. Taveras, who claims most of the accusations against him are either false or a misunderstanding, said in his testimony this week that he had consensual sex with his ex-girlfriend hours before the alleged home invasion.
