SL County Councilwoman Wilson launches 2018 Senate bid, hoping to take on Orrin Hatch

Washington – Salt Lake County Councilwoman Jenny Wilson on Monday officially launched her bid for the U.S. Senate seat up next year, saying she wants to bring actual change to Washington.
Wilson, a Democrat, says she hopes to challenge Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican who has said he intends to seek an eighth term.
“Over the past few months, I have been overwhelmed by the encouragement to run by Utahns who are desperate for change in Washington,” Wilson said in a statement.

 

Nevada authorities identify Utah child who died after being left in hot car

A 3-year-old boy who died after being left in a hot car parked in Las Vegas has been identified as being from Utah.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office identified the child as Chase Lee, of the central Utah town of Filmore.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the boy was left in the car Saturday for at least an hour while temperatures climbed into the triple digits.
The cause of death for the child will be released when autopsy findings are completed.

September evidence hearing set for Daggett County sheriff, two employees accused of inmate mistreatment

Silver Summit • Evidence detailing alleged mistreatment of Daggett County jail inmates is to be presented in court in early September, as the criminal cases against the county’s former sheriff and two of his employees move forward.
Third District Judge Kent Holmberg set a Sept. 7 preliminary hearing for former Sheriff Jerry Jorgensen, Jail Commander Lt. Ben Lail and Deputy Joshua Cox — who all appeared in court together in a Summit County courtroom on Monday.

Utah forecast: Continued hot temperatures with occasional thunder and rain

A high pressure ridge will rule Utah over the next couple days, keeping temperatures above average along the Wasatch Front.
The Salt Lake and Tooele valleys expected highs around 100 on Tuesday — up 2 degrees from Monday. Upper-90s are expected Wednesday.
Those readings were 5 to 8 degrees above normal for this time of year, but still expected to fall safely short of the record-setting 103-104 range.

Man dies after motor scooter, car collide in Salt Lake City

A motor scooter driver in Utah has been killed after a collision with a car.
KTVX-TV reports the 42-year-old man was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital after the Saturday night collision.
Police are still investigating who was at fault.
Police say they’re unsure if the man on the scooter was wearing a helmet.
The driver and the passenger of the car are in good condition.
The car’s driver underwent alcohol testing on scene.

 

Utah County to match Salt Lake County’s population in next 50 years

Watch out Salt Lake County, Utah County is gaining on you — and in the next 50 years will become almost as populous.
By 2065, Salt Lake County is projected to have 1.69 million people (from just under 1.1 million in 2015), with Utah County only slightly behind at 1.62 million (up from 586,000 now).
That’s according to population projections released Monday by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah in collaborations with the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget.

Amid growing drug crisis, thousands of discarded needles create ‘health risk’ in Utah and across U.S.

Lowell, Mass. • They hide in weeds along hiking trails and in playground grass. They wash into rivers and float downstream to land on beaches. They pepper baseball dugouts, sidewalks and streets. Syringes left by drug users amid the heroin crisis are turning up everywhere.
