Utah nonprofit seeking donations of water for homeless youths and adults

With temperatures in Utah reaching record highs, Volunteers of America, Utah (VOAUT) is collecting bottled water to help homeless youth and adults beat the heat.
“The hotter the weather gets, the more clients we have coming in,” Jayme Anderson, the nonprofit’s director of volunteer services, said Tuesday. “It [water] goes very, very fast.”
Water is distributed at the organization’s Youth Resource Center and through its homeless outreach program.

A 10-day trial has been set in September for Lyle Jeffs, a former bishop of the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who was captured last month after absconding from pre-trial release in a federal food stamp fraud case.

Cache County Sheriff: ‘Endy’ the dog died of heat exhaustion after being left in K9 truck

An internal Cache County Sheriff’s Office investigation has found that K9 service dog “Endy” died of heat exhaustion after being forgotten in a hot, unattended patrol truck by his handler earlier this month.
Sheriff Chad Jensen said Tuesday that the handler, who was not identified, had been placed on unpaid leave for an unspecified period.

 

Utah mother pleads guilty to child abuse after malnourished son was found locked in a bathroom

A Toquerville mother who was accused of leaving her severely malnourished son locked in a bathroom has pleaded guilty to child abuse charges.
Brandy K. Jaynes, 36, pleaded guilty as charged Tuesday in 5th District Court to three counts of second-degree felony child abuse, according to her attorney. She faces a maximum penalty of one-to-15 years in prison on each charge when she is sentenced on Aug.

Investigation into how BYU police access other agencies’ records is complete — now state prosecutors will review

Utah Highway Patrol troopers are looking at distracted driving as a contributing factor to a fatal rollover crash early Tuesday morning in Cache County.
