OGDEN, Utah • The owners of a northern Utah restaurant chain say they’ve honored to be the first Hispanic grand marshals of the Ogden Pioneer Days Grand Parade.
The Standard-Examiner newspaper reported Monday (http://bit.ly/2uQ3IUh) that Javier and Amanda Chavez say they’ve been interested in the Pioneer Day festivities since they arrived in Utah four decades ago.

Two killed in Duchesne County head-on

Two people were killed Sunday afternoon on Duchesne County’s State Route 87 near Ioka.
Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Evan Kirby said the 4:36 p.m. head-on collision killed the drivers of a 1995 Chrysler and a 2008 Hyundai sedan.
Two passengers in the Chrysler and four in the Hyundai survived the crash, Kirby said.

 

Court adjourns for two retiring Utah judges

Even before J. Frederic Voros Jr. and Stephen Roth were appointed to the Utah Court of Appeals, they were well-known and well-respected by members of the judiciary.

Rolly: Confederate flag shows up again — this time in Draper

The Confederate flag is like a cockroach. It keeps popping up, no matter how many times you try to kill it.
The latest appearance was at the Draper Days Parade on July 15 as the Utah chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans proudly marched in Confederate uniforms next to a car bearing a banner with a Confederate flat logo on the front.
“I couldn’t believe it and immediately snapped a photo for evidence,” wrote blogger and Draper resident Sunny Washington.

 

South Salt Lake: A leader in refugee resettlement and education

South Salt Lake • Something remarkable is happening in South Salt Lake.
The city of 25,000 has 14 community centers — including one specifically dedicated to refugees, called the Hser Ner Moo Community Center.
They promise this: Every child has the opportunity to attend and graduate from college; every resident has a safe, clean home and neighborhood; and everyone has the opportunity to be healthy and prosper.
The department that oversees the centers is called Promise South Salt Lake.

 

Motorcyclist killed in Midvale crash

A 29-year-old man died Sunday evening after a crash on State Street in Midvale.
The motorcyclist had been traveling south on State Street at 8:37 p.m., and a car turned left in front of him at 7500 South, according to Unified police Detective Ken Hansen.
The motorcyclist crashed into the car, which hit a second car, Hansen said. The motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital, where he was declared dead, Hansen said.

 

Fire crews have two Box Elder County wildfires under control

Fire officials on Sunday said they expect to have 100 percent containment by day’s end on a wildfire burning grass and brush near Grouse Creek in Box Elder County.
The wildfire — which started at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon — burned 703 acres and was 80 percent contained by Sunday afternoon, according to spokesman Mitch Zundel.

Donald Trump’s approval rating falls below 50 percent in Utah, where voters are split on the Russia investigation

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has once again dipped below 50 percent in Utah as the investigation into possible ties between his campaign and Russia continues to hound his first six months in office.
But in a new Salt Lake Tribune-Hinckley Institute of Politics poll, respondents were evenly split over whether Russian meddling in the 2016 election is cause for concern.
“It was a little bit of a surprise to me,” said Jason Perry, director of the institute.
