Woman stabbed outside Amarillo store

A woman is in serious condition after being stabbed outside a convenience store on Amarillo Boulevard.
At 6:38 p.m. Monday, Amarillo Police Department officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Amarillo Boulevard on a reported stabbing.
The woman, 27, was stabbed in the the upper body. She told police that she was walking out of a convenience store when she was attacked by a white male who stabbed her and left.
The victim was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

 

North Amarillo violence spreads after shooting death

Violence following a shooting in north Amarillo on Monday afternoon carried over into Monday night and Tuesday morning, according to Amarillo Police Department.
During the evening and overnight hours, APD responded to several shots-fired calls in the Hamlet area, just north of Hamlet Elementary School.
Officers responded to the 3100 block of Oak Drive for the second time on reports that a car had been set on fire. APD reports said a white Ford Crown Victoria had been shot and then set on fire in front of a home on the street.

 

Tractor-trailer crash near Vega kills 2

Two men from Hereford died Tuesday morning following a head-on collision between two tractor-trailer just north of Vega.
At 7:43 a.m., a tractor-trailer driven by David Garza, 70, of Hereford was traveling north on U.S. Highway 385 roughly four miles north of Vega when a tractor-trailer driven by Edward Carrillo, 37, of Hereford crossed over into the northbound lane and crashed head-on into Garza’s truck.
Both Garza and Carrillo were pronounced dead on the scene by Oldham County Justice of the Peace Kristi Homefeld.

 

Law enforcement to change river rules

Potter County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a news conference for Friday morning to discuss the growing concern over hunting and shooting near the Canadian River on North State Highway 287.
According to a release sent out Tuesday morning, the public has been under the impression that they can go to the Canadian River off Highway 287 to hunt and shoot guns.
The release went on to say that unrestricted shooting is causing problems now due to several houses being built in the area and an increase in public traffic, such as ATVs riding along the river bottom.

 

Borger man gets 58 years in child sex case

A Borger man was sentenced to 58 years in prison for indecency with a child by sexual contact, aggravated sexual assault of a child and sexual assault of a child following a trial.
Brandon Wayne Taylor, 35, of Borger assaulted a then-13-year-old girl multiple times in the fall of 2014 in Borger, according to reports.
After all of the evidence was presented, the jury deliberated for more than five hours before finding Taylor guilty on three of his six indicted counts.

 

Abbott, Patrick disagree on special session for school funding

Days after Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick suggested that Gov. Greg Abbott call a 30-day special session to overhaul the state’s school funding system, Abbott said Monday that no such special session was needed.
Patrick told the Midland Reporter-Telegram last week that there is not enough time during next year’s 140-day regular session to discuss overhauling the controversial “Robin Hood” school funding system, which redistributes money from property-rich school districts to property-poor districts.

 

School bus safety protocols reeinforced

Drivers in areas with heavy school bus traffic might have noticed an unusual number of patrol vehicles in the vicinity of the buses recently, and with good reason.
Local DPS officers who took part in expanded school bus safety efforts in October put patrol cars in areas with high traffic around school buses and in some cases, even put DPS troopers on buses to help crack down on drivers who are not obeying Texas laws regarding school bus safety.

Special enforcement operation leads to surge in drug busts

A spike in drug arrests last week valued at nearly $6.8 million turned out to be exactly what Texas Department of Public Safety officials hoped for after planning a “special enforcement operation” designed to catch people in cars transporting drugs
According to DPS Sgt. Cindy Barkley, seven drug seizures were the result of a planned, yet random, area of targeted enforcement that are not specific to just one area of the state.

The Amarillo Police Department and the Potter and Randall Counties Special Crimes Unit are investigating a shooting that occurred Monday afternoon in North Amarillo that left one man dead.
Kharyi Terrell Nichols, 25, was transported to Baptist Saint Anthony’s emergency room in a private vehicle, where after a brief period of treatment he was pronounced dead.
Just before 1 p.m. APD officers were called to the 3100 block of Oak Drive, approximately two blocks north of Hamlet Elementary School, on the report of a shooting.
