Barber wins tough race for Polk County judge

County Judge Susan Barber, reprimanded by the Florida Supreme Court in 2015 for having a personal relationship with a bailiff, defeated challenger Carson Bassett on Tuesday, receiving 54 percent of the vote. With all the votes counted, Barber, 50, received 36,026 votes to Bassett's 30,530 votes, or 46 percent.

 

2 of 3 School Board races head to runoffs

One of 11 candidates secured a seat on the Polk County School Board in Tuesday's election. Four others are headed to a runoff on Nov. 8. Incumbent Lori Cunningham beat out three opponents for a fourth four-year term in the District 2 seat. She was the only one of the candidates to receive more than 50 percent of the vote.
