Kershaw may need rec center property for new industrial park

KERSHAW – No, the Andrew Jackson Recreation Center on North Matson Street isn’t for sale.
But Kershaw town officials are exploring the possibility of buying it from the county.
Engineering plans for Kershaw Commerce Park show the main entrance cutting through the rec center parking lot. The park must have two entrances, and a dirt road on the site isn’t wide enough for a southern entrance.
“We didn’t find out about this until two weeks ago,” said Kershaw Town Administrator Mitch Lucas.

 

IL town vote clears its last state hurdle

Indian Land residents should get the chance to vote on becoming a town no later than the third week of April.
John Delfausse, vice president of Voters for a Town of Indian Land (VTIL), said Tuesday that the group submitted its election commission nominees to S.C. Secretary of State Mark Hammond’s office Friday.
“It’s to the point now that when the secretary of state approves the commission, they’ve got 20 to 90 days to hold the election,” Delfausse said.

 

1-car crash kills woman on S.C. 9 in Buford

A Lancaster woman died Sunday after a single-vehicle wreck on S.C. 9 near Heyward Hough Road in Buford.
The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 60-year-old Debbie Roberts. She was transported to Springs Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Lynette Walker.
An autopsy was performed Monday, but no results were released.

 

James Brooks arrested again on meth charge

Former school board member James M. Brooks has been arrested on drug charges for the third time in 14 months, this time for possessing methamphetamine.
The 51-year-old Lancaster resident was arrested just before 6 p.m. Monday evening, according to a release from the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

 

School board picks 3 principals

Lancaster County’s school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to appoint new principals at Buford High School and Harrisburg and Indian Land elementaries.

 

Missing 10-year-old boy found

Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile said about Tuesday night that missing Dequarris Whitted had been found and was safe.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department is trying to locate 10-year-old Dequarris Whitted, who went missing after getting off his school bus at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Winter storm warning issued for Lancaster County

Lancaster County is under a winter storm warning from 2 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
The highest amounts of snowfall predicted are in parts of Lancaster and Chesterfield counties nearest to the North Carolina state line. Total snow accumulations of up to 2 inches are expected.
According to the NWS press release, a dusting of snow is possible over the Central Midlands, with slightly higher amounts of an inch or less possible across the northern Midlands.

 

Lancaster woman dies in single-vehicle collision

A Lancaster woman died shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday when she was involved in a single-vehicle collision on Highway 9 in Buford near Heyward Hough Road.

Identified by the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office as 60-year-old Deborah Roberts, she was transported to Springs Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Lynette Walker.

According to S.C. Highway Patrol Officer Joe Hovis, Roberts was traveling East on Highway 9 when her vehicle left the roadway, overcorrected and hit a fence and a tree.
