Labor Day: A Time to celebrate and help

On this Labor Day weekend, as we celebrate the contributions of American workers, we must also remember those among us who have little or no work and don’t earn enough to keep their families out of poverty. That’s something I know about, at a very personal level, from my childhood in Columbus. And it’s a statewide public-policy challenge I deal with today as director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

 

Letter: Donaldson’s work kept us employed

In a recent letter, Doyle Phillips decried several false and misleading statements about both Larry Donaldson and the upturn at the tank plant. Larry’s views are outside of the ultra-conservative political norm, but not necessarily the political main stream of our great nation.

John Ashbery, celebrated and challenging poet, dies at 90

NEW YORK (AP) — John Ashbery, an enigmatic genius of modern poetry whose energy, daring and boundless command of language raised American verse to brilliant and baffling heights, died early Sunday at age 90.
Ashbery, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and often mentioned as a Nobel candidate, died at his home in Hudson, New York. His husband, David Kermani, said his death was from natural causes.

 

Steely Dan co-founder, guitarist, Walter Becker dies at 67

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Walter Becker, the guitarist, bassist and co-founder of the 1970s rock group Steely Dan, which sold more than 40 million albums and produced such hit singles as “Reelin’ In the Years,” “Rikki Don’t Lose that Number” and “Deacon Blues” has died. He was 67.
His official website announced his death Sunday with no further details.

 

Dayton to install traffic cameras after court decision

DAYTON (AP) — Dayton officials say they’re sticking to their plan to install speed and red light cameras at five locations in the wake of a state Supreme Court decision lifting the requirement that officers be present when camera tickets are issued.
The Dayton Daily News reports city officials began assessing what they would do after the court decision in late July and subsequently decided on 10 fixed cameras at five locations.

 

Iconic brewery smokestack in Cincinnati to be torn down

CINCINNATI (AP) — A smokestack that’s been a part of the Cincinnati skyline for more than 150 years is scheduled for demolition.
The Greater Cincinnati Redevelopment Authority says the signature Hudepohl smokestack on top of the former Hudepohl Brewery will be torn down when demolition of the building begins in about six months. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports asbestos must be removed from the site before demolition can occur.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the site is littered with hazardous toxins like asbestos.

 

Ohio county officials reject plans for needle exchange

WARREN (AP) — Officials in a northeast Ohio county have rejected a plan to create a needle exchange program to combat the rising number of hepatitis C infections in intravenous drug users.
The Tribune Chronicle reports Trumbull County’s health department abandoned the idea because of opposition. A public health nurse says the county was prepared to follow state guidelines for needle exchange programs after making a “correlation” between intravenous drug use and blood-borne diseases.

 

Cleveland unions refuse to hold flag at Browns opening game

CLEVELAND (AP) — Members of unions representing Cleveland police officers and paramedics have said they won’t hold a large U.S. flag during pregame ceremonies prior to next Sunday’s Cleveland Browns season opener after a group of Browns players knelt during the national anthem before a preseason game last month.
Steve Loomis, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, cited his service in the U.S. Navy when he told WKYC-TV he was astounded that Browns management knew of the protests but allowed it to occur.

 

Get This: Authorities put up drug dealer’s sneaker collection for sale

NEWARK (AP) — A central Ohio county is selling off an assortment of collectible sneakers seized from a convicted drug dealer.
The Columbus Dispatch reports there are 67 boxes of confiscated footwear up for sale by Licking County officials. Bids will be accepted through Sept. 15 on the website GovDeals.com. Proceeds will be used to fund drug investigations by the Licking County law enforcement task force that found the sneakers.
The name-brand shoes range in size from 10 to 12.
