Comment on Historic artifact for a holiday weekend

Sixty years after the Beatles’s first U. S. visit, the rock band still holds Billboard’s record for most No.1 songs on the Hot 100 chart and the record for most No.1 albums (19) in the history of Billboard’s tracking. And sixty years later, there is still behind-the-scenes footage of that two-week visit in February 1964 that has not been widely seen.

Elton John is still standing better than ever in his engrossing new documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late, a look back at the highs and lows of the singer’s 50-year performing career. Premiering on Disney+ on Dec. 13, the documentary features never-before-seen film footage, diaries, and audio interviews for his memoir Me, plus animations that recreate the Grammy winner’s memories.

Mysterious drone-like objects have been sighted flying over parts of New Jersey—and parts of New York, and Pennsylvania in recent weeks—drawing concern and confusion from residents and state officials, even prompting the FBI to investigate. Federal officials have said that the objects do not appear to be drones and do not provide a threat to public safety, but state officials are pressing the federal government for more information.

Fans of the Emmy-nominated black comedy thrill ride Dead to Me were likely excited to learn that creator Liz Feldman was returning with another Netflix-bound murder mystery series. How they’ll feel after finishing the first season of No Good Deed may be another story.

People who care about movies always say they want filmmakers to take chances, to show them something they’ve never seen before, or at least open their eyes to a new way of seeing. The latter is exactly what RaMell Ross does with his second feature Nickel Boys. Adapted from Colson Whitehead’s affecting, elegantly written novel about two young men struggling to stay afloat at a brutal reform school, Ross’ movie may not open a door to a whole new kind of filmmaking—Terrence Malick, for one, has experimented with a similar painted-from-memory approach.

Kraven the Hunter, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the predatory Spider-Man villain, is the last superhero movie of 2024, but it might also be the last entry in its franchise, too.
