A number of Reddit users are aiming to make a stand, as a protest movement has erupted on the platform against entrepreneur Elon Musk. At the inauguration of Donald Trump, the X owner made a hand gesture which spread across social media as some suggested it resembled a Nazi salute. The moment has sparked debate with the Tesla CEO denying that was the case. It was shortly after when this online protest began, with NBC News reporting that more than 50 subreddit communities have been identified as no longer allowing links from X to be shared on the platform. The different communities that are protesting range in size, with a total of at least 40 million members according to the amount of people in the subreddits. Communities across Reddit protest against Elon Musk In one of the posts, within a community hub for fans to talk about the going-ons of the game Destiny 2, the moderator stated that Elon Musk “showed the world who he truly is.” They went on to say that “effective immediately, we will no longer be allowing links to X, formerly Twitter…” The decision was taken by the communities moderation team, with the hub being home to 910,000 members. An independent Formula 1 community on Reddit, which has 4.8M members, has also announced it will be banning X content and the moderator is urging journalists, creators, and photographers to make their content available on alternative platforms. “We had already been encouraging Bluesky as a source over other platforms, since by not forcing users to log in it is more accessible and it does not suffer from the various other issues affecting Twitter,” the moderator said. Several of the groups have referenced the ban in an effort to reduce traffic to the social media site, suggesting that every click lost will add up.
