Avalanche blow early three-goal lead against Oilers as defense wilts in 4-3 defeat

Thursday night’s high-powered showdown between the star-laden offenses of the Avalanche and Oilers, featuring the league’s past two Hart Memorial Trophy winners, lived up to its billing. Unfortunately for the Avs, the end result was undesirable, as Colorado blew a 3-0 lead en route to a 4-3 loss at Ball Arena. Nathan MacKinnon contributed to that early advantage with a pair of first-period goals, but the Colorado defense wilted over the final two frames as Edmonton controlled the momentum for the final 40 minutes. “Their possession time (was the difference), and us not being able to stop it in the defensive zone,” Avs head coach Jared Bednar said. “… I’m okay with spending some time in our zone, because that’s what they do — they’re first in the league in O-zone time, and they hang onto it, and hang onto it.
