Palm Beach County is taking steps to ensure golf courses and parks never encroach on dozens of designated “natural areas” across the county: There are about 31,800 acres of untouched land, rich with South Florida’s flora and fauna. The county’s effort was partly brought on by the state’s now-scrapped controversial plan to make changes to state parks, such as adding golf courses and pickleball courts, among other considerations, to some sites. The county’s Environmental Resources Management department presented a proposal to county commissioners recently about adding permanent protections to each of the 38 county-owned natural areas. “In the face of increasing development pressures, the county’s current protections may not be sufficient to guarantee the perpetual preservation of these unique native lands,” county staff wrote in county documents. “Therefore, partnering with and granting conservation easements to conservation land trusts is being proposed as an effective tool to provide additional perpetual protection to these native lands.” Conservation Florida, a nonprofit land trust dedicated to the protection of water, wildlife and wild places, will work with the county to create private conservation easements for each of the 38 natural areas.
