The key for leaders to have a greater impact is to be strategically mindful.  In the typical working day, leaders juggle multiple priorities, stakeholders, and decisions, which can lead to cognitive overload. Cognitive overload occurs when the demand on cognitive resources exceeds one’s capacity to manage them. It negatively impacts working memory, decision-making capacity, and performance. Additionally, when leaders are in the cognitive-overload spiral, they can’t be mindful, and working harder won’t help. 

One of the most difficult leadership traits to develop is productivity. Here’s how you can improve yours in a world full of distractions. I have spent over 16 years studying more than 30,000 leaders from interviews at my own executive search firm, focusing on the leadership strategies that boost the exemplary candidates above the rest. 

Amazon reportedly wants to sell sofas for $20 on a new discount site. It’s not a bargain. At a typical furniture store, a sofa might cost $2,000. If you browse on Temu, the giant online marketplace that ships products directly from Chinese factories, you can find a sofa for $23. We all get frustrated at work. But what you do with that frustration is important. At some point, someone at work is going to upset you. The Pew Charitable Trusts and the architectural firm Gensler have a proposition for Denver renters struggling to find a place to live that won’t bust their budgets.
