Comment on Boulder city manager accuses NAACP of attempted blackmail in police chief dispute

Former One Direction singer Liam Payne, 31, was found dead after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, local officials told Argentine media. Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, said on Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel that Payne fell into a courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel in the trendy Palermo neighborhood of Argentina’s capital.

Family members of Erik and Lyle Menendez, the two brothers serving a life sentence for fatally shooting their parents—Jose and Kitty Menendez—in their Beverly Hills home in 1989, called for the pair’s release and resentencing at a Wednesday news conference in Los Angeles. During the press conference, family members announced a new coalition to advocate for “Justice for Erik and Lyle” and urged people to sign a petition asking the District Attorney to move forward with a resentencing for the pair.

One Denver realty company is accusing another of stealing its commission following the sale of a $7.3 million mansion south of the city. The dispute has its origins in 2018, when the real estate agent Christy Owen of Kentwood Real Estate helped McKay and Nina Belk buy a $2.1 million home in Cherry Creek. McKay Belk is an heir to and the former president of Belk department stores, which is based in North Carolina, and a former Coca-Cola board member.

A San Francisco developer is banking on apartments for a vacant Cap Hill office building. Re-viv submitted plans to the city last week proposing to turn the existing four-story,  55,000-square-foot building at 1390 Logan St. into a 51-unit apartment complex. The building was previously the headquarters of Credit Union of Colorado, which constructed it in 1962.

A year-long dispute between Boulder officials and leaders of the local NAACP chapter over the city’s new police chief took a fresh turn Wednesday when the city manager accused members of the civil rights organization of attempting to use blackmail to prevent the chief’s permanent hiring. A member of the Boulder County NAACP secretly recorded what was intended to be a confidential mediation session on July 25 between three members of the civil rights organization, Boulder police Chief Stephen Redfearn, police chief of staff Alastair McNiven and City Manager Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde, the city manager alleged in a news release Wednesday. Boulder County NAACP president Annett James then threatened in an email to make that information public if the city hired Redfearn — the Boulder Police Department’s interim chief — as the permanent police chief, Rivera-Vandermyde alleged in the news release.

PLAINS, Ga. — Jimmy Carter cast his ballot in the 2024 election Wednesday. The former president voted by mail, the Carter Center confirmed in a statement. It happened barely two weeks after Carter celebrated his 100th birthday on Oct. 1 at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he’s been living in hospice care.
