Like his wife, Vice President Kamala Harris, Doug Emhoff embodies a lot of firsts. The first second gentleman. The first Jew to be the spouse of a vice president. Both roles that could soon get an upgrade. But what jumped out to me about Emhoff’s speech on the second night of the DNC was something he shares in common with far more Americans: He’s part of a blended family.

On Tuesday morning, as the party coalesced around Vice President Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention, doctors spoke at a press conference in Chicago about what they witnessed in Gaza since last October as volunteers. At many points, their testimony proved unbearable. Tanya Haj-Hassan, a pediatric intensive care doctor, described treating children with no surviving relatives—a situation so common an acronym has been needed in the hospitals: WCNSF (Wounded Child, No Surviving Family).

On the first night of the Democratic National Convention, three women shared their personal stories of needing an abortion or miscarriage management. One was Kaitlyn Joshua, who was denied this care in Louisiana shortly after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. When Joshua began to miscarry around 11 weeks into her pregnancy, the bleeding was profuse and the pain worse than birth with her first child.

It doesn’t take a lot of detective work to grasp that the mood within the Democratic party has improved dramatically since Kamala Harris replaced Joe Biden at the top of the presidential ticket. Her campaign raised a staggering $310 million in July. Her poll numbers have shot up, moving key states like Arizona and North Carolina back into play.

A pair of laws adjusting how tax refunds are distributed will largely benefit Coloradans at opposite ends of the income scale, according to recently released demographic analyses. The two laws, passed as Senate Bill 228 and House Bill 1311, each targeted tax collections expected to surpass the cap set by the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, or TABOR.

Amid a yearlong delay, Denver’s voter-approved sidewalk construction and repair program took a key step forward Tuesday when a City Council committee gave preliminary approval to a plan to charge most property owners a flat rate of $150 a year starting in 2025. But some owners with large properties — including Denver’s Department of Parks and Recreation and other government entities with big tracts of land — could face significantly higher bills if they have more than 230 linear feet of sidewalk running along their lots. Impact fees of $3.50 per additional foot over 230 would be applied to those properties under the proposed changes.
