Violence and mass shootings often surge in the summer months, especially around the Fourth of July, historically one of the deadliest days of the year. A flurry of shootings around the holiday a year ago left more than a dozen people dead and over 60 wounded. Just two years ago, another mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade left seven people dead near Chicago.

The Colorado Court of Appeals on Wednesday overturned a ruling that Teller County sheriff’s deputies are allowed to act as federal immigration officials to detain people in the country illegally. A group of Teller County residents and the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado first sued Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell in 2019 over the agency’s agreement with U.

A major mortgage lender with offices across the country is cutting 187 more positions from its office in Greenwood Village after having announced the elimination of a total of 420 jobs in two previous rounds of layoffs. Newrez, based in Pennsylvania, said the latest layoffs will start Aug. 26 and will likely be permanent.

The Central Division had the best top-three teams in the NHL last season, but a terrible last-place club kept it from being the league’s best from top to bottom. That might change this season. It’s been a splashy start to the 2024 offseason around the league, but a few of the also-rans in the Central look much improved just a few days into July.
